Definitions

Plan the tread layout

  1. Height is the right-angle distance from ground to upper floor.
  2. Runner length is the hypotenuse of the stairway triangle.
  3. The tread is the actual step resting on a cleat.
  4. The calculation assumes a desirable 7.5-inch tread height and 1.5-inch tread thickness.
  5. Enter all measurements in inches.

Common configurations include a 120-inch platform height with a 144-inch runner, or a 96-inch platform height with a 120-inch runner.

Treadline distances

    The lower treadline is where the top of the cleat is placed. Adding the 1.5-inch tread places the top of each step at the upper treadline.
